Wednesday, July 22nd, 2009There was a film in the early 1990’s starring Sean Connery as a research scientist working in the Amazon Jungle who discovers the cure for cancer. The cure will come eventually and the world will rejoice that this awful disease that can strike anyone at any time, has been been silenced. Because we don’t fully understand exactly what causes cancer it means that we can only take certain precautions to avoid it.
Could it be true that we are all born with it? The word is often used by many to explain something that spreads out of control.
A cancerous tumor keeps growing but a benign one is self-limiting and generally won’t cause any harm to the body. As you get older the risk of cancer increases. While smoking, chemicals and radiation for instance, can be the cancer trigger, it is the poison from these or other sources that transform body cells and create genetic abnormalities which grow and multiply.
To further complicate matters, it can also be the result of problems with faulty genetic codes passed down by parents which means that a person can be born with pre-cancerous cells although faults can also occur with the body’s DNA replication ability. However this does not mean you will contract it as the relationship between carcinogens and an individual’s genetic makeup is a complex one.
Cancer is one of the top ten diseases that is researched regularly throughout the world and the truth is we have learned a great deal from studies performed around the globe. We are continually trying to find out why this disease attacks some and not others. Knowledge like this could enable more people avoid contracting cancer in the first place.
Your regular diet could be putting you at long term risk from all kinds of diseases. Recent studies have shown that calcium received from dairy products can be harmful to men and could encourage the onset of prostate cancer.
Cancer can affect any part of the body from the bones, blood, skin or organs. nowhere is safe from it. Long term research has helped the situation and many forms can now be treated at even later stages than could be only a little while ago. Advancements in medical science and techniques means that cancer in many cases can be treated and often completely cured.
